The Daily Star: Three tanners die from gas poisoning

Three workers died from inhaling toxic gas and several others fell ill at a tannery in the city's Hazaribagh area yesterday morning. Carbon monoxide, a gas lethal to humans and animals, was the cause of death. It was produced by chemicals mixed in a wrong drum, said officials of the factory, Apex Tannery Ltd. The three were identified as Shah Alam, 45, Dulal Mia, 45, and Mohammad Solaiman, 55. The first two died on the spot as they opened the large wooden drum at around 7:00am. Solaiman, who went to the rescue of his coworkers, died at Sikder Hospital. Of those taken ill, nine were admitted to hospitals and clinics in the city. Syed Manzur Elahi, chairman of Apex Tannery, told The Daily Star that it was an accident and it was first of its kind in the company's 36 years. "Of the deceased, one had 29 years' experience in leather-making and the rest two had nine years' each," he added.

Shakil Ahmed, a worker of the tannery, told The Daily Star, "As soon as drum man Shah Alam and assistant drum man Dulal opened the liming drum, they fell to the ground. "When Solaiman and I went to see what happened, we too passed out. After a few minutes, I regained my senses,” he continued. Shah Alam and Dulal opened the drum to check the condition of the hides kept there on Thursday night. "The moment we found the tanning drum empty, we knew where things went wrong,” he added. Mohammad Ali, manager (engineering) of the factory, said rawhides are cleaned with lime in the liming drum and after that, they are soaked in chromium sulphate in the tanning drum. Administrative Officer Golam Sarwar told The Daily Star, "The liming drum was filled with carbon monoxide when chromium sulphate was poured in it by mistake." Enamul Huq, officer-in-charge of Hazaribagh Police Station, said the factory authorities have filed an unnatural death case in this connection.

Independent: Elk that lived for 2 years with a rubber tyre around its neck finally freed

A bull elk that wandered the hills of Colorado with a rubber car tyre around its neck for over two years, has finally been freed. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials, this was the fourth attempt to help the four-and-a-half years old elk which weighs about 270 kgs. Officials said that they had to tranquilise the elk and cut off its five-point antlers to remove the tyre because they couldn’t cut through the steel in the bead of the tyre.

“We would have preferred to cut the tyre and leave the antlers for his rutting activity, but the situation was dynamic and we had to just get the tyre off in any way possible,” officer Scott Murdoch said to agencies. While officials estimated that the tyre weighed around 16 kgs, the elk surprisingly did not suffer any grievous injuries. “The hair was rubbed off a little bit, there was one small open wound maybe the size of a nickel or quarter, but other than that it looked really good,” said Mr Murdoch to the Associated Press. He adding: “I was actually quite shocked to see how good it looked.”

Officials were able to locate the elusive elk after residents near Pine Junction, southwest of Denver, reported its location.

“I am just grateful to be able to work in a community that values our state’s wildlife resource,” said Dawson Swanson, Mr Murdoch’s fellow officer. “I was able to quickly respond to a report from a local resident regarding a recent sighting of this bull elk in their neighbourhood. I was able to locate the bull in question along with a herd of about 40 other elk.” Officials also said that due to the rutting season, the elk was spotted alongside a bigger bull-which made it easier to locate it.

The elk was first spotted in 2019 in the Mount Evans wilderness during a wildlife population survey for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and mountain goats. Officials said that while this elk has been freed, wildlife like deer, elk, bears often get entangled in a host of other objects like swing sets, hammocks, clothesline, and volleyball nets.
